The Opening Ceremony

Watching the drum performance at the beginning of the opening ceremony...

Me: Isn't that awesome? There's 2008 drummers and they're all moving together. When the camera moves back it looks like 3D art.

E2: Yeah, but when is it going to start? When are they going to start flipping and stuff?

Me: Flipping? You mean the gymnastics? There are no Olympic events tonight. This is the opening ceremony; celebrating the start of the Olympic games. It's a big show of Chinese culture welcoming all the athletes to China.

E2: So, no gymnastics?

We had to leave for the school's summer reading program pool party less than an hour into the program, and I still haven't watched the recording but I can't wait.

Tonight, watching women's gymnastics, E2 has declared her intent to be in the Olympics. Do they need to be 16 to compete? That means the summer games of 2020 will be the earliest she's eligible. She'd miss the 2016 games by about a month.

I'm all about the gymnastics, too! I was so tickled that we got home from swimming tonight just in time to watch the USA women's gymnastics. I told hubby that if my family had had the resources when I was a young girl, I would've loved being a gymnast -- I had the build for it and I was pretty good at what tumbling skills I picked up in P.E. -- but I wouldn't have enjoyed the strict dieting AT ALL (said by the woman who has an apple pie cooling on the kitchen counter at this very moment LOL).

E2 could compete in the 2016 Olympics because they have to be 16 in the year they are held.

"Gymnasts have to be 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible for the games. "
